The flour can be omitted. For more flavor, use whole peppercorns and cumin seeds, toast them and grind them. Canned tomatoes can be used instead of fresh. You can add chili powder, diced jalapeno, or other chilies for more heat. Brown sugar and diced vegetables can also be added for variety. Extra broth can be added for a more stew-like consistency.
