Equipment

  • skillet

Ingredients

Meat and Vegetables

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 cup mushrooms, finely chopped
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • ½ teaspoon ground cumin
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Cheese and Pita

  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella or cheddar cheese
  • 4 pieces pita breads, halved

Condiments

  • 1 cup tzatziki sauce
  • Chopped lettuce and tomatoes for serving, optional

Instructions

Cooking Steps

  • Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add onions and garlic and sauté for 2–3 minutes until soft.
  • Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon.
  • Stir in mushrooms, oregano, cumin, salt, and pepper. Cook until mushrooms are tender and any moisture has evaporated.
  • Stir in shredded cheese and mix until melted and combined with the beef mixture.
  • Warm pita breads slightly and open pockets.
  • Fill each pita half with beef and mushroom mixture, then top with a spoonful of tzatziki sauce.
  • Add lettuce and tomato if using, and serve immediately.

Notes

Use Greek yogurt-based tzatziki for a tangy, refreshing contrast to the savory filling. For a vegetarian version, replace beef with lentils or plant-based meat. Can be prepped ahead and assembled just before serving for quick lunches.
